Stargate (almost finished)


This is using the water effect i uploaded earlier this week and also the stargate effect all i have to do now is the texture of the gateway its self which is going to be a metal type of texture. I did encounter one problem with the gradient ramp map will not work right i am trying to sort the problem

Testing out some water effects

With some help from harrison i was able to cerated this awesome water effect with no add ons i thought it was a good idea to try this way because it uses next to no polygons this will help keep my faces to a minimum unlike the effect on my gateway with uses has 100s on

Team Plan

Me- i am doing a Canyon environment its also going to be in a Cow boy and Indians style with totem pools salons I am also going to look at the History of Billy the Kid to help get a idea of things that went on in that period. i am also modeling the train.

Steve- He is going a futuristic utopia environment with flying cars and Japanese style of modern building like there new project sky city. He is also doing the players character in a indiana Jones style and also the main villain the time terrorists he is also thing of going down to there base which will be in the style of the massive france sewers

Wayne- He is doing a Gothic fantasy style environment with a sea of sand out of final fantasy and ruins in the landscape with will be the scene of a battle there will also be a city which will be in a early christen style. He is going to put modern ark statues doted around his environment to add a twist.

Jordan- He is doing a castle on a hill side for his environment, his characters are going to be in a avatar style so big and blue he is also going to give them a native american twist to help them tie in with the story. He has also been told to look up dances with wolfs to help him get a better feel for what he is doing. His landscapes area also going to be in a fantasy style.

Marcus - He is doing a ancient Egyptian environment with monuments that comes to life and he is also going to do some research on Julius Caesar for to help him design a character

The winners where

For intellectual it was Steve's who won he will be changing his text and adding a type face like mine he won with 8 Votes i think this was a good choice because it looks very professional

For RZP Harrison's won having a closer look i do think this is the best one for that team the main change every one said was make it look more like a cartoon penguin with a white belly he won with 9 votes


The winner for Visual flare was Dom's most people picked up on the same thing as me it will bee a border or you would have to make the hole case in that same pattern

Logo choices


In are team i voted for Wayne's logo because i think it looked the most professional and i liked the use of the mortar board on the arcade machine to symbolises intelligence.



My logo only got 2 votes one of the main things people said about it was it had to relevance to intelligence but when i was creating it i thought that aliens represent a higher intelligence but guess i should of make it more clearer




For RZP i picked Joe's i picked this because i liked the design on the zombie penguins i also liked the dark colours he used. The only problem i could see was if theyhadof used it Joe would of had to created some type of border to go around it to because of how it was designed


For Visual Flare i picked Dom's mainly because of his artistic effects on this text also like Joe's it will need a border of some kind

My Drawing

I have created a moon board that will help me in the development on my 3d environment. I picked this image from my mood board to try different styles
This is the printed out version on the image i draw lines on it to help map out where stuff is also spit it into four bits to try different stylesThis is my finished image, drawn and coloured i tryed 4 different styles Top left is pastels and pencil crayons i like this style because i think the crayon building and the pastels work well together creates a good contrast. Top right i didn't change so i had something to compare the rest with. Bottom left is felt tips i decided i didn't like the look of them so i just outlined the buildings. Bottom right is my favourite i just used a pencil to shade it in

Genre idea for my game trailer

Everyone is going to create there own area and they will be connected by a gateway. So the genre will change from area to area. But my zone is going to be in a western stye liek teh image below.


There is also going to be a sci fi gate which takes are train to the different areas its going to be modeled on the stargate

Logo designs

Every team members is going to design 2 or more logos to put forward to the rest of the team. When every one has created there 2 logo we are going to allvote on the one we like the most. These are the 2 logos i made.


This was my first design taking a arcade type machine and having it roll different types of people e.g dumb,silly and intellectual. But it would be on intellectual at all times because of are name also put arcade under it to finish it off

This is the second one i did its my favorite out of the two designs. I decided aliens because they symbolizes a greater intelligence which works in with are name also i have designed it in arcady fashion




MoodBoard

Me and my team made this mood board to help us think of different ideas for a logo. We cut up many different magazines to find a variety of different logo and images. We did this to help us find out which colours stand out on the page e.g "Man Made Hell" this is because its big but also because its a yellow on black background which makes the text stand out more. Also got a idea off the EA logos in the top right hand corner of the page that we can use the same logo just change the colour scheme depending on what we are trying to sell. Also found that some of the best images/logos was the very simple ones like the bear in the mood board very simply designed but still looks very cool

Playing with particles

This is using two particle systems one being the middle beam and the over being all the particles coming in from the tube. The beam is just using the normal processes and the over one is using a force called push to get the cluster effect in the middle

How to make a landscape

1. Open Photoshop and 3ds max.
2. Open a new Photoshop doc set detentions 512x512 and a resolution at 72.
3. make your back ground Black and using the brush tool pick a light gray and start to make your landscape then pick a lighter gray and go over the bits u want higher on your landscape keep doing this until u are happy.
4. When u r happy with it save as jpeg.
5. Make a plane set your faces to 100 or more depending on the size of your landscape.
6. Put a displace modifier onto the plane.
7. where is says bitmap on the drop down menu click and then find your texture map into it.
8. All you have to do then is up the strengh up to how much u want it.

Last post


this is most likely going to be my last post until after the summer so im going to upload the finished render of the room i made. I sorted every thing out :)

Evaluation

The image below is my end product I did make a lot of changes like changing the hole character that I was going to use I started with Brian (the bog out of family guy) but when I was seeing if I could draw him to a standard I was happy with. I found getting the proportions right was very hard in one of my drawing I ended up making fat brain that was in one of the episodes so I started looking for a character that had more detail so focus was not of proportions in the end I settled on the evil monkey that is in Chris bedroom I liked this character because he is bit of a mystery and it turns out I found him much easier to draw. But this was before I decided on a story so it didn’t interrupt any of my plans in the future but then I had the sorted out I stayed with most of my over planes like the layout and story one think I change because I was told I should have bigger transitions from scene to scene so I decided to have the jump from the monkey realising that he missed his wife and instead of putting one of him in the plane flying over to her. I went strait to him getting off the plane and running into the forest (middle box). Also I was not going to just have her I was going to have a kid in it too but I decided again it to save time and also didn’t no how to draw a baby cartoon monkey was thinking of just having a smaller monkey but didn’t like it so I just decided to take him out completely. I also made this comic suitable for all ages with no violence and no bad language.

The main thing I think is a strength of this project is the art I sent a lot of time making it look good I did this by drawing all the images in it by hand and scanning them into Photoshop then drawing over them with the brush tool and then colouring it in with the fill tool and the gradient tool to stop it looking like one block colour. The think I don’t like about this is the story its not very good and I don’t think any one would understand what is going on first time I should of spend a little more time thinking of a good in depth story instead of the simple one I settled for. But I did learn some cool stuff in Photoshop like some of the filters and stuff bit I tried to stick with stuff I new because it saved time and because I new about it I could use the tools properly. I did almost not get my end comic in on time because of the time I spend on getting it to look as it does and I did manage my time but I ended up spending much less time of planning and much more time on making the comic. If I have the chance to create it again I would spend much more time on thinking of a good story to go with the art work. Even with my story not being very good I like the overall outcome of my comic mainly because of the quality of my drawing amazed me and I am also happy with how much my drawing skill has come along

Re-render

Did it again but i still didn't set the texture id right on the mirror but this is a much higher quality render about 2 and a half hours to finish rendering, did it when i was at college doing my test (i passed)

I created a room :)

This is some thing i did at home its using mental ray again like the glass but this time i decided to make some thing a little harder than a glass there is still one problem the thing in the top left hand corner is meant to be a mirror but it didn't work when rendering, i no how to solve this problem but i was rendering this one frame out for more than a hour so i decided just to leave it.

Ship finished

This is my ship animated and i also created an environment (docking area) to go with it and just for fun it brakes to little bits at the end (where is a partical effect of the engine but you cant see it on this little window :P)

Hammer time (fracture test)

This is using a reactor helper called fracture it is not finished this still some bugs like the hammer gets smashed to little bits but a little block of it does not fall but it takes a long time to animate it because of all the faces so i will sort it out later and i think i should of set it to 150 frames so stuff had time to settle also its a little to shinny on the inside of the bricks so i should sort the textures on them too.

Visit to Huddersfield University

On Tuesday the 25th of may we went to Huddersfield university to look around the games studios and some of the over equipment they have like the recreation area with had 6 or 7 projectors and integrative tables to display data. We also went to reserved place there there. There work was outstanding they said they was one of the top uni games studios in the country. There was also a end of year show that was going on down stairs which showed all the university's best games and judged them to see who's was the best. There is also some one coming from team 17.

Particle effect test

This is a particle effect that I was messing around with. I was using this because it i wanted to see if i could use it for my ship to enhanced the engine effects

Level of detail

Most game have Level of detail is one way you can lower the poly count this is when the computer changes the high poly models with lower poly one when you are a long way away from that object this is used in almost every game so that they don't work the processor to much. To stop you from knowing that this it happening they have fade zones so closer you get to it, it will fade into the next model atleast 3 different models at the different levels but this can go up to 5.

Is the end product appropriate for your intended audience?

When I was thinking of the target audience I researched who apple was aiming their iphone at this turned out to be “successful younger men as its target market”. I looked this up in my planning because I wanted to target the same audience as the iphones this should make my icons much more popular. So I tried to creative them for males I think I did this for almost all my icons but the only one that is a little girly is the ghost icon. I think this is because of the colours I picked.

To create my icons I used a range of tools in Photoshop thing like the brush tool, crop, the selected tool I also used options like save for web and devices I used this on my finished design to created transparent .GIF. I also used layers to get the border effects haw I wanted them and them merged the layers so it started like that. But before I did any of that I hand draw them and scanned them in at 300dpi.

Discuss the content / style of your work

I did have some problems with the creation of my icons.

One being the border I had to redo it many times until I got it prefect and how I wanted it, this was only complicated because I wanted one part of my icons to be over lapping and a different part under the border but I sorted this out with layers. I also had a problem with “save for web and devices” this was because it made all the outsides of my images white and I was putting them on a black background but I sorted this out by changing the matte to black which made the outline of the icons fade into black. I learned for the change the matte of a .GIF and also that planning is very important on saving time in the long run. I think the main skill that I have developed in my drawing skill this is because before this project I did not think I could draw at all and also I met all deadlines because I planned out what I was going to do and when I needed to have it finished bye.

If you had the opportunity to make this product again would you do anything different? And are you happy with the overall product?

Overall I think my product was a success a have had some good feedback of my class mates and the only thin I would changed if I could do this project again is that I would do more concept drawings to develop my ideas more and also I would not but as much detail into my drawing this did cost me a little time and it was point lass because the icons a very small but apart from that I stayed to deadlines finished all my icons on time.

Does the end product match your original intentions?


Overall my end product was a success this is because I kept with my original ideas. The only thing I changed was the colours this is because I did not put much fort into them but at the end I decided to colour them in so I picked the simple colours like green for the dragon to the left mostly red for the bike I did. I decided to pick some good colour for every design and then use different shaped of that colour to stop it looking like one block colour.

My ships engine

I have started on one of my ships engines this is because i thought the first one i made was to plain. I got the the stage I'm at at the moment by getting a normally box and changing the shape and beveling some faces.
